For parents, the safety of their children in the car is paramount. That's why the publication ADAC & TCS crash test results is always a moment to look forward to. The aim of crash tests is assess the behaviour of each model in terms of safety, operation, ergonomics and pollutant content. To guarantee their independence, the car seats tested are selected by the organisations themselves and purchased completely anonymously. For these initial results for 2021ADAC, TCS and their partners examined 26 car seat models of all sizes and ages. Eighteen of these car seats were judged to be "good" while three models were noted as "satisfactory. The last five seat models were judged to be "insufficient. The cause was a excessive pollutant content for four of them and one serious safety issue for the latter. Unlike the previous crash test session in October 2020no model has managed to achieve a score of "very good".

An Excessive Presence Of Pollutants
Since its inclusion in the rating criteria, the excessive presence of certain pollutants systematically leads to a devaluation of the final mark of the seats concerned. Despite excellent results in terms of safety, four seat models failed due to the presence of toxic substances in their upholstery covers. Visit BeSafe iZi Go Modular X1 i-Size, the Swandoo Marie 2 and theOsann Oreo 360 had their scores downgraded following the discovery of traces of naphthalene and DPHP, substances that are potentially dangerous for young children. Following the announcement of these results, Swandoo, BeSafe and Osann took immediate steps to modify and replace the offending components as quickly as possible. Although the presence of pollutants is still problematic, this in no way detracts from the good results of these models in safety. By way of comparison, car seats Babyzen and Stokke assessed on the basis of BeSafe iZi Go Modular X1 i-Size obtained excellent results showing that only the seat cover was at fault.
Le Chicco Kiros i-Size + Kiros i-Size Base was the only car seat to have been "flunked" from this crash-test session for for safety reasons. Indeed, this baby cosy detached from its base during the head-on collision violently throwing the seat with the dummy towards the front of the vehicle. In the event of an accident, the risk of serious injuries for the child would have been dramatic. Aware of the danger, Chicco has launched a replacement campaign of its Kiros i-Size base.
A high level of safety
This year, the baby cosy were the most numerous models tested. In all, ADAC and its partners examined fifteen seat models designed for children from birth to 18 months or so. This large number of models can be explained in particular by the way in which this type of seat is attached, which can be done using both a dedicated ISOFIX base or the safety belt. Due to the risk of incorrect installation the use of the seatbelt, the risks associated car seats associated with their bases are regularly rated higher.

Using the ISOFIX® mounting system with the entry into force of the i-Size regulation, the use of a base considerably reduces the risk of incorrect installation. In this respect, the combination of a baby cosy and a base is considered to be the safest alternative. However, the use of a baby cosy correctly installed using a safety belt is just as safe for a child's safety.

Whether installed with a ISOFIX base or with the safety belt of the vehicle, the use of a baby cosy is still the safest way to travel with a baby. In addition to its rear-facing position (the safest), the baby cosy is perfectly suited to the particularly fragile morphology of newborn babies. That's why we regularly recommend the use of a baby cosy such as first car seat.

More and more car seats, such as the Klippan Oti 128 or the Britax Max-Way and Max-Way Plus, allow children to travel with their back to the road for as long as possible, up to the age of around 7. As a reminder, it is strongly recommended that children travel with their back to the road for as long as possible to considerably reduce the risk of serious injury to the most vulnerable parts of their body (head, neck and spine) in the event of a head-on collision.

Car booster seats with backrests not only offer a high level of comfort, but also enhanced safety for the child, particularly in the event of a side impact. The use of a car booster seat is compulsory in cars for children over 15 kg or 100 cm, depending on the type approval of the car seat. Booster seats enable your child to fit snugly into the adult seatbelt until he or she is old enough.
